The increasing demand for Model United Nations (MUN) conferences
in city schools and colleges is evident these days with more institutions organizing
mock UN sessions. With some schools and colleges already organizing mock
UN sessions, students of Sophia College are the newest entrants.
Mun sophical 2011, in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre for
India and Bhutan, will be held at the Sophia College premises this weekend. We used
to conduct MUNs during our annual cultural fest but stopped some years ago. Since
mock UN sessions are again gaining popularity amidst students, we decided to revive
the tradition, said Shruti Parmar, secretary of the International Relations Club
at Sophias, who initiated this MUN. The theme for this event is Education for Justice,
Peace and the Integrity of Nature with a special focus on human rights. The MUN
will also have a committee on the Joint Session of the African Union and the Organization
of Islamic Cooperation deriving lessons from the recent African crisis.
With over 200 students participating from across the country, the discussions are
bound to be remarkable. What makes them more interesting are the speakers who have
been invited to speak before each session starts. The purpose is to inspire participants
at the beginning of their session, added Parmar. Activist Binayak Sen, Meera Sanyal
and Pritish Nandy are some of the speakers. Munsophical 2011 will be inaugurated
on Friday (9th Dec. 2011) and will end on Sunday (11th Dec. 2011).
