A proposal to start a junior college at PMC-run schools had come up for discussion
at the meeting.
All Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)-run schools could soon
have classes upto Std X. At the general body meeting of the civic body
on Monday (19 Dec), Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal urged schools boards to provide higher
education at their schools.
We will expand the number of standards in PMC schools. Students will be able to
study here till the 10th standard, the mayor said. We will also give the go-ahead
to start junior colleges in the schools. A proposal to start a junior college at
PMC-run schools had come up for discussion at the meeting. Some corporators opposed
the idea, saying that these schools had been set up on land reserved for primary
schools, but the administration insisted that opening junior colleges was a possibility.
If a primary school is currently operating there and space is available, then we
can start high schools or junior colleges, said Mahesh Pathak, PMC commissioner.
Some corporators said that giving priority to higher education was more important
than starting junior colleges at PMC run schools. We run English medium schools
up to the seventh standard. After the seventh standard, students find it difficult
to get admission in other good schools, said corporator Avinash Bagwe.
Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal said that the PMC would try to do both. At the meeting,
there was also a discussion on opening branches of leading PMC schools. If these
leading schools are given a chance to start their branches on vacant PMC school
premises, then the overall standard of PMC school education will go up, said Subhash
Jagtap, leader of the house in the PMC. He said that this would also help provide
better education facilities to all strata of society. Many times students representing
deprived class find it difficult to get admission in leading schools.
