Career in AME, College Details
Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) are the ones who are responsible for the overall
maintenance of the aircraft and ensure that the aircraft is in an ideal condition
before take-off. They need to be completely focused on safety as the casual attitude
can pose serious danger to hundreds of people on board. They have to certify whether
the aircraft is fit for flying. Their job includes diagnostic and mechanical duties
covering maintenance, repair, trouble shooting in addition to performing inspection
and modification on an aircraft at the least possible cost.
Eligibility:
A candidate has to be 12th pass (PCM) with 50% marks. Admission is through written,
medical and aptitude test. Candidates are required to undergo a 3 year certificate
course in aircraft maintenance engineering, conducted by various training schools
approved by the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Candidates also need
to undergo structured aircraft type courses in the mechanical or avionics stream
and obtain regulatory licenses or approvals on a type of aircraft. Candidates can
work in support services, in technical services engineering, planning, quality assurance
and logistics. Courses on structured aircraft type maintenance are also desirable.
In order to become an aircraft maintenance engineer, one should obtain a license
from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). A three-year aircraft maintenance
engineering license training course is offered by a few institutes approved by the
DGCA. Those who have passed Plus Two/equivalent examination with physics, chemistry
and mathematics as subjects or three-year diploma holders in any branch of engineering/equivalent
examination are eligible for admission.
Career Options:
You will be absorbed in an airline company as maintenance engineer and will be the
highest paid among the engineers. There is a great demand for Aircraft Maintenance
Engineers (AME) as more and more airlines are coming to India. Other jobs for aircraft
maintenance engineers include flight and ground instructors, flight dispatchers,
factor facilitators, aviation psychologists, aviation doctors etc.
Aircraft maintenance engineers support qualified aeronautical engineers in the development
and maintenance of civil and military aircraft, defence systems and satellites.
Maintenance engineers may be involved in testing, development, manufacture or maintenance.
Some engineers have flexible working hours. Some aircraft maintenance engineers
are self employed as sub contractors. These are some of the areas where the candidate
can work after completing the course in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.
Aircraft Maintenance Engineers have a huge demand in the west. Countries like USA,
France, UK and Germany have shown the way as far as technological advances and inroads
in space are concerned. Many candidates are working as technicians and engineers
in NASA. The payment that an entry level engineer would earn is 20,000 to 26,000
pounds. Many engineers prefer working in India as India is one of the fastest developing
countries and presents a lucrative market and lot of well paid jobs for engineers.
The biggest projected airline growth region in the world is the Asia pacific region.
Due to growing competition, the demand for Aircraft Maintenance engineers is also
on the rise. Aircraft maintenance organizations and regional airlines provide the
best opportunities to the applicants presently. Candidate who has passed
Aircraft Maintenance engineering course can work in airlines like Air
India, Indian Airlines, Pawan Hans, Helicopter Corporation of India and flying clubs,
private airlines and government owned services. They can also get employed in companies
like Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Defence Research and Development lab, National aeronautical
lab, Aeronautical Development Establishment, Civil Aviation Department etc.
