A special meeting of the IIT council has been convened by the Union HRD ministry
for June 27.
The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the Indian Institutes
of Technology will hold an emergency meeting on Saturday, 23rd June, 2012 in Delhi
to discuss the admission process for 2013. The board has not yet met after 28th
May when the Centre announced the JEE reforms to be implemented from 2013 when a
common entrance test will be held for all centrally funded technology institutes,
including the IITs. The decision has caused resentment among the premier technology
institutes prompting IITs Delhi and Kanpur to announce that they will conduct their
own separate tests.

Usually JAB meets in the first week of August with the new chairmen. This meeting
will, however, be attended by the directors of all IITs and the chairmen of JEE
2012. We hope that a possible solution to the problem could be arrived. There are
rumours about the Centre considering a new proposal for admissions to IITs and we
are expecting to be informed about it, said an official from IIT-Bombay, adding
that there was no confirmation on it yet. An IIT-Delhi source said, whenever there
is a change in the policy, the JAB is supposed to discuss it. The meeting on Saturday,
23rd June, 2012 will discuss the nature and modalities of JEE 2013.
Though the pressure on the IITs to adopt the new JEE mounts with the Centre saying
they will not go back on the council decision, IIT-Bombay’s senate is yet to meet
to discuss the issue. The special senate meeting, earlier scheduled on June 27,
has been postponed to the first week of July. In a mail sent by the faculty forum
last Friday, 22nd June, 2012 only 65 out of more than 450 teachers on the campus
have responded. A faculty member attributed the poor response to the vacation. Many
faculty members are not on campus, so the meeting will be held after they rejoin.
The director is yet to confirm a date for the senate. We need to ensure that the
attendance is at least 150-200, said the professor.
Council meeting on June 27: A special meeting
of the IIT council has been convened by the Union HRD ministry for June 27. The
JAB meeting on June 23 assumes significance as it will precede the meeting of the
council, the highest decision-making body, headed by HRD minister Kapil Sibal and
including directors of all the 16 IITs. The council would discuss the situation
created by the difference in view among the IITs by the Centres proposal and the
future course of action to end uncertainty among students, a source said. The meeting
will discuss the fallout of the move of the two IITs, address the issue of uncertainty
faced by the students and the way ahead, a statement from the ministry said.
