Maharashtra Health Science & Technical Common Entrance Test (Engineering)

Introduction

What is it?

Government of Maharashtra conducts a single Combined Common Entrance Test for selection to all degree courses in Health Science,B.VSc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science And Animal Husbandry), Engineering and Pharmacy courses.

The Competent Authority for the ‘ MHT-CET Examination’ is Director of Medical Education and Research, Mumbai. However for the selection process there will be two separate Competent Authorities. For selection to Health Science courses, Director of Medical Education and Research, Mumbai will be the Competent Authority. For selection to Engineering and Pharmacy courses Director, Technical Education, Mumbai will be the Competent Authority.

For which Colleges/Courses/State :

MHT-CET is conducted for all degree courses in Health Science, BVSc & AH, Engineering and Pharmacy courses in Maharashtra State.All Engineering colleges in Maharashtra admits students through MHT-CET Score.

Who can appear :

Candidate should be an Indian National and should have passed/appeared* the HSC (Std.XII) examination of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent examination with subjects English, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

AND

Secured minimum 50% marks i.e. not less than 150 marks out of 300 marks (minimum 45% marks i.e. not less than 135 marks out of 300 marks in case of candidates of Backward class categories belonging only to Maharashtra State) in the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics added together AND Obtained a non zero score in subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics added together at MHT-CET .
Other eligibility criteria for specialized branches of Engineering :

Candidates seeking admission to some special courses or under some special provisions have to fulfill the following additional eligibility criteria.

• Admission to Bio-Medical/ Bio-tech Engineering course :
  Candidates seeking admission to Biomedical/Bio-Tech Engineering course should have passed in the subject of Biology in the qualifying examination.
• Admission to Mining Engineering course :
  Female candidates are not eligible for admission to Mining Engineering course.
• Admission to Marine Engineering Course in Padm. Vasantdada Patil Pratishtan’s College of Engineering, Sion, Mumbai :
  Candidates aspiring to take admission to Marine Engineering Course in the following institute should directly contact the Principal of the college for eligibility criteria (Educational Qualification & Entrance Test) and admission process.

Exam Pattern

MHT-CET consists of two papers :

The MHT-CET will be conducted at all the District Headquarters of the State of Maharashtra. The MHT-CET examination center will be within the same district from where the candidate has passed / is appearing at the qualifying examination i.e. HSC/12th Standard examination. For the eligible candidates passing qualifying examination from outside the state of Maharashtra, the Competent Authority shall allot the examination center. The Centres of examination for candidates who have passed their HSC (12th Std) or equivalent examination from an institution situated outside the state of Maharashtra shall be the district/headquarter of the Divisional Authority where he/she has submitted MHT-CET 2010 Application Form.

Syllabus

The syllabus of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics for MHT-CET are same as the syllabus for Higher Secondary or Class XII examination of the Board of Maharashtra.

There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

Mumbai students Udit Kaushik Chitaliya, with a 200/200 score, and Shagun Jyotin Shah, who scored 199 marks, emerged state toppers in the engineering and medical segments of the MHT-CET 2009, respectively.

How to Study Efficiently :

• Make a proper plan of your syllabus. Divide it among parts. Layout weekly tasks rather than daily ones. Give time to revision as well.
• Stick to good books . But the more important part is that you study them thoroughly.
• While studying at home, do a question time-bound. This will increase your speed. But remember if you are not able to do it in that time, don't give up by looking at the answer, try again. Even after giving it a good time you are not able to solve you may refer solution or may ask your teacher or here itself.
• Make yourself comprehensive notes and small sketches. (make them attractive)
• Don't worry about board exams. The syllabus is not very different and can be managed easily. By studying NCERT you are automatically preparing for them.
• Be up to date. Periodic revision is must.
• Regularly solve model papers.

Madhuri Nagare, who topped the city in the MHT-CET 2009 exam, comes from a family of medical professionals, she has set an entirely different goal for herself. "I want to become an IAS officer after completing my degree in engineering," she declared on Sunday.

Madhuri, a student of Fergusson College, scored 197 marks out of a total 200 marks in the physics-chemistry-mathematics (PCM) segment of the MHT-CET . With a cent percent score in mathematics, and a near-perfect 49 and 48 out of maximum 50 in physics and chemistry respectively, Madhuri also secured the fourth rank in state, along with Shrirampur's Saniya Sheikh.

So, what makes Madhuri break away from the family tradition of pursuing a career in medicine? "I fear medical studies. I enjoy mathematics and did not opt for biology in my junior college studies," she said.

The IAS dream, she said, is fuelled by her mother's wish that either Madhuri or her brother should become a bureaucrat. "The fight against corruption is a great challenge. I would eventually like to become a district collector," she said.

Madhuri's immediate priority though, is to bag a B.Tech seat in the coveted College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) or the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute in Mumbai. "I will either opt for electronics and telecommunications or for computer engineering," Madhuri said.

Madhuri scored 93.33 per cent in her higher secondary school (HSC, Class XII) exam. She also figured in the extended merit list of the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) and wants to start preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination once her engineering admissions are over.
