Introduction

What is it?

The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (popularly known as IIT-JEE or just JEE) is an annual college entrance examination in India. The admissions to the Undergraduate Programmes at these institutions for all Indian and Foreign national students are made through this Examination.

The Indian Institutes of Technology are institutions of national importance established through an Act of Parliament. These institutes have programmes comparable to the best institutes in the world. All these institutions are known for providing quality education in science and technology and for research in frontier areas. Achieving entrance into an IIT is often considered the pinnacle of achievement for a student of the sciences, and the IITs/IT-BHU/ISM attracts most of the brightest students of the nation. As It is one of the toughest engineering entrance exams in the world Success rate or Passing percentage is around 1 in 45.

Today, alumni of these institutions occupy key positions in industry and academia in India and abroad.

Who can appear?

A candidate has to satisfy ALL the eligibility conditions given below,

• Candidates appearing in JEE for the current year should have either passed the Qualifying Examination in same current year or should be appearing.
  E.g. Candidates appearing in JEE -2010 should have either passed the qualifying examination in 2009 or should be appearing in 2010.
• They should also satisfy the specific Eligibility Criteria in the qualifying examination.
• Candidates should meet the Age Requirement, Physical Fitness, Special Requirements for Mining courses.
• A candidate can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years.

examination topper, Shitikanth, during ‘Shiksha Diwas’ celebrations to mark the birth

anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in Patna on Tuesday.

8.30 this morning, Shitikanth, 17, discovered he had topped the All India Joint Entrance Exam for the Indian Institutes of Technology. Since then the celebrations haven't stopped in his Patna home, neither has his cell phone stopped ringing.

"I had expected to be amongst the top 5 and since the scores are not out yet -- I am hoping to get a score of 440," Shitikanth told rediff.com on the telephone from his home.

The sons of doctor parents, Shitikant says he will opt for IIT-Kanpur to pursue a degree in computer science. "I have always been interested in it and feel not only is a good field but will also give me great scope for research."

Before he enters the hallowed portals of IIT-K, he will travel to Vietnam on July 17 to participate in the Physics Olympiad.

Having scored 91.4 per cent in his Class XII examination this year, Shitikanth says he followed a very flexible study schedule.

Giving tips from his own preparation, he followed three primary basics for his exams:

"Focus. Give every subject equal importance. Keep a basic but flexible schedule where you say that I will finish so much in so much time."

He says he mostly studied on his own but would meet for group studies when he wanted to discuss a problem.

Thrilled, he says he has been celebrating with his parents and sister, a student at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. "We are going to have a huge bash tonight," says the new star of Patna.
