Best paper, worst result for science
AHMEDABAD: Parents and students across Gujarat were left scratching their heads in disbelief when class XII science stream results were declared on Thursday.
Given that the passing marks had been reduced from 35 to 33, grading had been introduced and most students had found the questions easy, a record-breaking number of students were expected to pass out this year.
Instead, it is the lowest result in five years. The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) announced a 69.16% result for 2010-11. Last year, 75.77% had passed out. Board members said one reason for the dip could be the decision to stop giving 15 grace marks this year.
The recommendation was made by a committee headed by former chief secretary Sudhir Mankad. Board officials revealed they decided to give five grace marks all the same after they realised that the result was drastically low.
The students who had missed the exam on May 1 due to AFMC exam were required to re-register themselves with AIEEE on its official website from May 2 onwards.
This allowed 5,000-odd students to come out of the 'needs improvement' category.Without the grace marks, the result would have dipped close to 60%. Of the 90,000-odd students who took the exam this year, only 0.37% students got the 'A1' category.A massive 30.36% students were in the 'needs improvement' category.
GSHSEB chairman Hasmukh Adhia said, "This year, we had cracked down on centres notorious for mass copying, which could be one of the main reasons for the low result". Despite the introduction of many reforms, the board chose to announce the results in a low-key manner and just released the booklet with the statistics at 9am. This year, the list of top 10 rankers in the state and districts too was not declared in an endeavour to reduce stress on students. This is also the first time where no student has been marked 'F' or failed in the mark-sheet.
