Mumbai University grants more seats in Mass Media (BMM) and Management Studies (BMS) courses

Degree colleges

There is still hope for students to get into their preferred degree colleges with the Mumbai University granting 65 colleges more seats in coveted courses such as mass media (BMM) and management studies (BMS). While the university has been granting colleges' additional intake for the past two years, this year the extra seats were given only if colleges met certain conditions.
"Only colleges who had fulfilled conditions such as sending teachers for assessment, paying university dues and following the reservation policy were granted additional intake," said Rajpal Hande, director, Board of College and University Development.
A committee was formed last week to check if colleges had fulfilled all these conditions. "While a lot of colleges applied, many applications were rejected because the colleges did not fulfill the new criteria," said Principal Devidas Mule who headed the four-member committee.
The committee created a fixed percentage increase in intake. While BA, B.Com, B.Sc and BMM courses can be increased by 10%, BMS and self-financing B.Com courses will have an added capacity of 15%. Colleges who want to add seats to their B.Sc information technology and computer science courses can add up to 20% of the existing seats.
Every year colleges ask for additional intake to accommodate the rising demand for some courses. "Several courses, especially the semi-professional self-financing courses are in demand. The extra seats will be given based on merit to the next set of students who missed the cut-off," said Harsha Mehta, principal of SIES College of Arts and Science in Sion. "We will call up these students and inform them that they have been admitted. Many of these students might have taken admission in other colleges. If they choose to join us, they fees will be refunded as per university rules, if not we will call next set of students," added Mehta.
