The Goethe-Institute is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach.
We promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. We convey a comprehensive picture of Germany by providing information on Germany's cultural, social and political life.
Through our network of Goethe-Institutes, Goethe Centres, cultural societies and reading rooms, alongside our examination and language learning centres, we perform the principal tasks of cultural and educational policy abroad. We work in partnership with public and private cultural bodies, the German federal states and municipalities, and the corporate sector.
We draw on the rich variety of our many-faceted open society and Germany's lively culture. We combine the experiences and conceptions of our partners in Germany and abroad with our professional skills and engage in a dialogue rooted in partnership. In doing so, we function as service providers and partners for everyone taking an active interest in Germany and the German language and culture, and act independently with no political affiliations.
We face the cultural policy challenges of globalisation and develop innovative concepts for a world made more human through mutual understanding, where cultural diversity is seen as an asset.
No other Indian region has such a long and deep relationship with Germany like the southern state of Kerala. This relation dates back to the 19th Century, when the German missionary Herman Gundert came and settled down in Telichery in North Kerala. Gundert learned the local language Malayalam, translated Bible from English to Malayalam, compiled the first dictionary as well as the first grammar book and a newspaper in Malayalam in the year 1872.
With this long tradition of strong cultural bonds, the Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum was inaugurated on Friday, the 28th of November 2008 by the then Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Hon. Stefan Graf in the presence of the Goethe-Institute Director for Asia, Dr. Stefan Dreyer. Ever since the Goethe-Zentrum is the official representative of Germany, its language, culture, arts, science & technology, literature and politics in the capital city of Trivandrum. Through the language and cultural programs, the Zentrum attracts a huge number of students, researchers, writers, artists, scientists and others from different walks of life in Kerala.
With more than 96% of literacy, the people of Kerala have warmly welcomed the arrival of the Goethe-Zentrum in Kerala, which is also one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world.
Trivandrum is today the proud home of the Goethe-Zentrum and thanks to its ideal location near the University of Kerala, it has by now become the meeting point for German and Germany - Lovers, with a single goal of promoting academic, cultural, political and economic relationships between Kerala and Germany.
