IIT-G director Sudhir Jain said that 116 students joined the institute in 2011
The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhi Nagar (IIT-G)
has given admission to 24 Gujarati students this year. This is the highest number
of local students joining the institute ever since its inception four years back.
IIT-G director Sudhir Jain said that 116 students joined the institute in 2011.This
is the highest number of Gujarati students joining IIT-G in one year. In the last
three years, total 55 Gujarati students had become part of the institution, Jain
said.
Of the 24 students, 20 are boys while four are girls. Interestingly, there are also
a number of Gujarati students who have decided to come back to their roots when
they chose to opt for IIT-G over other IITs. The families of such students are settled
outside Gujarat for generations now, but they chose to study at IIT-G as they consider
it a fast developing and safe state.
Mihika Shah is one such student whose family hails from Vijapur in Guarat but has
been in Mumbai since the past three generations. Shah was getting admission in IIT
Kharagpur and Roorkee as well but she chose IIT-G as her parents considered that
Gujarat was a safe state for a girl to study.
Moreover, since IIT-G is connected with IIT Mumbai, I will get the benefit of good
quality lecturers who come to teach here, said Mihika.
Tushti Shah of Ahmedabad has opted for chemical engineering stream in
IIT-G. She too had other options but decided to come to Gandhi Nagar as it is fast
gaining reputation among the new IITs. Tushti is daughter of a chartered accountant
and had scored 93 per cent in HSC from Prakash School.
