15-40% hike in fee for professional Courses
Dreaming of a career in engineering, MBA or MCA? Get ready
to pay more. The fee regulatory committee for professional colleges on Tuesday declared
the new fee structure for 429 professional colleges. The hike of fees
is in range of 15-40%.
The committee has also declared the fee structure for the next three academic years.
This will be applicable in self-financed colleges providing degree and diploma courses
in engineering and pharmacy; master's degrees in business administration, computer
applications, engineering, pharmacy; and bachelor's degrees in architecture and
hotel and tourism management.
The committee said that though the fee hike for the next three year has been proposed,
a student who is enrolled in year 2011-12 will pay the same fee for the entire course
duration.
Citing an example, an official of the committee said that the fee fixed for Nirma
Institute of Technology for the year 2011-12 is Rs. 73,000. If a student enrolls
in the college in the year 2011-12 for the B.E course, he would pay Rs. 73,000 per
annum for the entire tenure of his course.
I. B. Peerzada, member secretary of the fee regulatory committee said, "Students
will not be required to pay the increase every year. This was a very challenging
task. The committee has arrived at the conclusion after meeting students, considering
books of accounts of colleges and evaluating infrastructure and staff of each particular
college."
The fee committee evaluated each college on 24 different parameters, he said. Each
college was graded in five different categories ranging from excellent to poor before
deciding the fees.
About 50 meetings of the committee were held to fix the fee structure. The committee
member secretary said the fee declared included tuition, library, laboratory, and
computer and even caution money. "The college will not be allowed to charge any
other fee under any head. If we find that a college charging more fees under a different
head, action will be taken against the college."
The committee is yet to declare the fee structure for 25 colleges, who have filed
litigations. Officials said that for a engineering degree course, the fee structure
was between Rs. 42,000 - 1.20 lakh. The existing structure was Rs. 28,000 - 1.20
lakh.
The maximum fee was in Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University. The fee committee
has fixed a fee of Rs. 1.20 lakh for the petroleum technology course, while the
fee for the remaining courses is Rs. 75,000.
Officials said that the every year there would be an increase of around Rs. 3,000
to Rs. 5,000 per annum in the fees applicable for the next three academic years.
Chairman of the committee former justice Akshay Mehta said, "This was a very challenging
job. When I joined the committee, I was under the impression that it was a simple
calculation, but to give justice to all, it was found to be more challenging."
